Is Hypnosis Safe?

Hypnosis is a natural phenomenon that we do each day without even knowing. We go into trance when we are driving our cars, watching TV, reading an enjoyable book, by doing this we have complete focus.

Hypnosis could be described as an ideal state of learning for the brain. It replicates a very powerful and transformative sleep stage called REM when the brain is relaxed, calm and more suggestible.

Hypnosis is not an actual therapy but a platform in which psychotherapy can travel. It not only helps in challenging thoughts, but also change emotions, which is something talking therapies alone take longer to achieve.

What does hypnosis feel like?

You will feel relaxed and peaceful, whilst you are guided through imagery and visualizations, whilst having an increased awareness of your physical and mental state.
You will shut off any noise, worry or distraction from the outside world and focus on internal and specific tasks and solutions. You may tap into memories or experiences whilst in a relaxed state of mind feeling safe and in control and more open to suggestion and change.

How long before you notice any change?

It depends from case to case but most people start feeling benefits immediately. Some people even notice positive change in areas of their life that they weren’t even expecting.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on the individual but as a broad rule, ‘Stop Smoking’ is one session, Phobias is four and all other conditions, generally, from eight to twelve sessions. This will be discussed in your initial consultation.

Is therapy only for people with severe mental health issues?

Absolutely not. While therapy is invaluable for individuals experiencing severe mental health challenges, it's equally beneficial for a wide range of concerns, from everyday stresses to personal development. Many of our clients come to therapy feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply wanting to understand themselves better.

You don't need a formal diagnosis to benefit. Therapy can help you navigate life transitions, improve relationships, build confidence, manage stress, develop coping strategies, and achieve personal goals. It's a proactive step towards greater self-awareness and emotional resilience, equipping you with tools to handle life's challenges more effectively, regardless of their perceived severity. Think of it as a space for personal growth, insight, and learning to thrive.

How long does therapy typically last, and what kind of commitment is involved?

The duration of therapy is highly individual and depends on your specific goals, the nature of the issues you want to address, and how quickly you integrate new strategies. Some clients find resolution in a few sessions for more focused concerns, while others prefer longer-term support to explore deeper patterns or navigate ongoing life challenges.

Each session typically lasts 50 minutes. We'll usually meet weekly initially to build momentum, and as you progress, we can adjust the frequency as needed. We'll work collaboratively to create an individual plan tailored to your needs, regularly reviewing your progress and determining together when you feel ready to conclude our work. Our aim is always to equip you with the tools to feel confident in managing your well-being independently.

What's the difference between everyday stress and anxiety that needs therapy?

It's completely normal to experience stress and worry in response to life's demands. Everyday stress usually relates to specific events or pressures (like work deadlines or financial concerns) and tends to subside once the situation passes. Anxiety, on the other hand, often involves persistent, excessive worry that feels disproportionate to the actual situation, or even occurs without a clear trigger.

If your stress or worry is chronic, interferes with your daily life, relationships, or work, causes significant physical symptoms (like persistent sleep problems or digestive issues), or leads you to avoid situations, it might indicate anxiety that could benefit from therapy. Our approach, including the 'Anxiety Equation,' helps you understand the brain's protective mechanisms and how perceived threats can become overwhelming, providing tools to effectively manage and reduce that deeper, intrusive anxiety.

How can understanding my "primitive brain" help with my anxiety or other issues?

On our website, we talk about the "primitive brain" – the part responsible for our fight, flight, or freeze responses. In therapy, understanding this isn't just theory; it's a powerful tool for change. Many of our emotional struggles, like anxiety, overwhelm, or feeling stuck, stem from this part of the brain reacting to perceived threats, even when there's no real danger. By learning how these automatic protective systems work in your unique experience, we can begin to identify outdated "templates" or reactions. This insight allows us to gently re-educate your brain, helping you move from automatic, unhelpful responses to more conscious, adaptive ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving. It simplifies the problem and opens the door to lasting emotional regulation.

Can therapy help with specific fears or phobias?

Yes, absolutely. Therapy, especially with the combined power of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and hypnosis, is highly effective in treating specific fears and phobias. Phobias are often an intense, disproportionate reaction triggered by our brain's protective system, even when the actual threat is minimal. Through CBT, we'll help you challenge the thoughts and beliefs maintaining the fear, while hypnosis allows us to work at a deeper, subconscious level. By engaging your mind in a focused, relaxed state, we can gradually desensitise your reaction, reframe your emotional responses to the feared object or situation, and help you regain a sense of control and calm.

What if I'm not sure what my problem is, or if therapy is right for me?

It's incredibly common to feel unsure about the exact nature of your difficulties or whether therapy is the right path. Many people come to us simply feeling overwhelmed, confused, or unable to cope, without a clear understanding of "why." Our initial sessions are specifically designed for this. We'll work together in a supportive and non-judgemental space to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Through this collaborative process, we'll help you gain clarity, establish the root causes of your struggles, and develop a personalised plan for moving forward. There's no pressure; it's a chance for us to understand each other and determine the best way to help you.

How quickly will I see results from therapy?

The pace of progress in therapy is unique to each individual. Some clients report feeling a sense of relief and gaining new insights within just a few sessions, especially as they begin to understand their emotional patterns or apply initial strategies. For deeper-rooted issues or more complex challenges, change can be a more gradual process. Our goal is not just quick fixes, but sustainable, meaningful change that equips you with lasting tools. We'll regularly review your progress and ensure you feel heard and supported every step of the way, celebrating your advancements as you move towards your goals.

Is what I share in therapy confidential?

Yes, confidentiality is a cornerstone of our practice and absolutely paramount. Everything you share during your therapy sessions is held in strict confidence. We adhere to professional ethical guidelines and data protection regulations (such as GDPR). The only exceptions to this confidentiality would be in very rare circumstances where there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others, or if legally required by a court of law. In such exceptional cases, we would always endeavour to discuss this with you first. Your safety and trust are our highest priority.
