“Does Hypnosis Work?” What to Know If You’re Doubting It

October 5, 2025by: Aaron Plant

It’s perfectly natural to wonder: Does hypnosis actually work? Especially when it’s often portrayed as mystical or theatrical, many healthy, curious people remain unsure and that’s okay.

Here’s how you can explore hypnosis with confidence even if you’re sceptical.

  1. Acknowledge Your Doubt and Reframe What Hypnosis Really Is

Your scepticism matters and it’s respected. Hypnosis isn’t about believing in magic. It’s simply a word for experiences you already know:

  • Losing track of time while reading or watching TV
  • Driving somewhere and realizing you vaguely remember the route but not the details
  • Moving between feeling tense and effortlessly relaxed

Imagine describing these experiences to someone: hypnosis is just a formal name for a familiar focused state and relaxed attention.

  1. Scepticism Doesn’t Stop Hypnosis From Working

In fact, being sceptical might actually help. Think of trying something new like sitting in a car—even if you’ve never driven. Scepticism doesn’t prevent the car from working.

Research shows:

  • Hypnosis reduces anxiety more than about 79% of control participants, with long-lasting effect.
  • It offers moderate‑to‑large relief from pain (effect size ~0.6–0.77), helping more than 70% of control groups.
  • Depressive symptoms improve with hypnosis—often as effectively as CBT, especially when combined.

So even if you’re doubtful at first, it doesn’t reduce your chance of benefit—you’re still fully capable of change.

  1. Use Scepticism as a Tool, Not a Barrier

“Scepticism is great—just don’t let it stop you from experimenting.”

You don’t need to change your mind before trying hypnosis. Instead, treat sessions like a test:

  • Stay curious. Notice what shifts even subtly as therapy progresses.
  • Let your inner critic observe: “I’m sceptical but I’m also open to seeing what happens.”

Sometimes you might surprise yourself—and scepticism becomes less essential.

What Hypnosis Looks Like in Joint Work

  • We always start with a conversation to map what you’re trying to change.
  • Then, I guide you gently into a relaxed, focused state (a hypnotic trance).
  • You stay in control, fully aware, and free to accept or ignore suggestions.
  • Suggestions you receive are tailored to your goals—like reducing anxiety, easing pain, or shifting habits.

At no point are you unconscious—or losing control. It’s just focused self-awareness.

What Clients Often Report

  • Noticeable calm or shift in perspective, even after one session
  • Less anxiety, better sleep, more clarity
  • A new feeling: “I’m steering—not stuck in place”

People who began sceptical often say they’re pleasantly surprised. One review of real clients described how hypnosis helped them reconnect with a calmer, more grounded version of themselves.

What I Say

“I’m sceptical”

“That makes sense—and is welcomed here.”

“What’s hypnosis really?”

A natural state you already experience daily.

“Will scepticism block me?”

No—it may actually help you see what’s happening objectively.

“How do sessions go?”

Guided relaxation, focused attention, and helpful suggestions. You stay in charge.

“What does research show?”

Anxiety, depression, and pain all respond well in many scientific studies.

Curious About Trying?

If hypnosis sounds strange, but worth exploring you don’t have to fully believe it for it to help you. You’re welcome to bring your healthy scepticism to sessions. We’ll focus on what matters most: whether you can feel better.

Research Highlights
  • Anxiety improves more than in ~79% of control groups.
  • Pain relief is significant (~0.60–0.77 effect size)—better than most controls.
  • Depression symptoms reduced in about 76% more participants vs. controls.
Final Thought

Hypnosis isn’t about cult-like belief or surrendering control. It’s about exploring new ways of working with your mind where scepticism becomes part of the journey, not a blocker.

If you’re open to seeing what it might do without having to believe in it first, let’s explore it together.

You’re in charge, I’m here to guide the process.
